About the betterpetshop
This application uses the following open source framework Tapestry 3.0, Spring 1.0 and Hibernate 2.1.2. The sample application is based on the Tapestry Pet shop, which can be downloaded from http://pwp.netcabo.pt/lneves/tapestryapps

I basically modified the application to use Spring and Hibernate framework.

My motivation for using Spring framework (Spring Framework) was to utilize the transaction wrappers, Hibernate wrappers, declarative transactions management, ease of change in Database vendors, ease in change of persistent implementation.

And the usage of Hibernate for persistent layer is obvious, Java programmers (specially me) don’t care which database their application using and all their intricate details. It allows us to switch database without changing any Java code at all. This is the best thing because when an application is deployed to different organization, each organization has their preference to a database vendor. With usage hibernate, no code changes are required to adapt to different database environments. All most all the popular database vendors are supported by Hibernate.

Tapestry, in my opinion, is the most elegant solution for Web application development. The advantages of Tapestry over other Web application framework is: ease of change management, complex Web UI can be developed, clean separation development team and many more advantages, see http://jakarta.apache.org/tapestry.
