Outsourcing has become an integral part of the overall IT strategy at many firms. It is not, however, without risk. A significant 78% of companies surveyed have ended an outsourcing relationship abnormally. The allure of outsourcing, however, remains. A majority (71%) of the companies that abnormally terminated a relationship hired a new vendor to outsource the function while only 29% brought the function back in-house. While IT outsourcing has become prevalent, it is not without risk. Every company must carefully weigh the benefits of outsourcing against the risks to determine if the potential benefits are justified. The study identified the top risks identified by users of outsourcing services as well as those perceived as the top risks by providers.It is interesting to note two areas where clients do not perceive relatively high risks. The good news for offshore providers is that a lack of proximity does not appear to be a major issue. To be truly effective, however, those providers will need to help their clients have more direct control over those resources.
